這首歌的寫作背景，是因為1984年時，Ethiopia(衣索比亞)發生飢荒，
身為歌手的Bob Geldof聽到這個消息和其他人合作寫下這首歌，
發表後還邀請了當時很多歌手來共襄盛舉，參予合唱。
以此歌曲為籌募飢荒賑災的款項，
出版後版權全數捐給慈善機構。
因為盛極一時，後來也出現改編或重唱版本。

詞的內容刻意將平凡生活的富足，
與非洲難民的苦難生活做了尖刻對比，
你因為富足而歡暢大笑的時候，
世界的另一端卻為生活而受苦受難，
從而引發人們的悲憫。

並以christmas time強調這正是應該
散播歡樂散播愛給全世界的時節，
耶誕精神本在救苦濟窮，

提醒大家有責任對弱勢施予援手。

曲風一開始以鼓樂為主軸，
到副歌才加入快節奏的音樂，
與其說是首溫情歌曲，
倒更像是催促大家注意到受苦難的人們。
以公益歌曲來說，
倒是很少見的曲風類型，
也算挺獨樹一格的。
